Lavonna Little Owl Real Bird, teacher of pre-Kindergarten students in the language immersion program at Crow Agency School, explains how she works with young students, incorporating consistency and repetition into their day. She describes the math skills she teaches in the Crow language, including number recognition, addition and subtraction, counting by tens, and subitizing (fast number ID).
Math Instruction
In this video, Ms. Little Owl Real Bird demonstrates how she warms students up with a song followed by rote counting. Next, students identify numbers out of order. Then she uses a simple board with “money” velcro-attached to it, and uses that to teach basic addition and subtraction. She follows that by reminding students how to count by tens, which is possible because of the way Crow number patterns operate. Finally, she does a quick round of subitizing flashcards.
Subitizing Cube Toss
This short clip shows Ms. Little Owl Real Bird working with a small group in a cube toss game. Notice how, when a student answers incorrectly, she helps them count with their finger on the dots. In her interview, she described how this cube can serve many purposes depending on what images she inserts into the plastic sleeve.
